Evariste Galois

Born:  25 October 1811, Bourg-la-Reine, France.

Died: 30 May 1832, Paris, France,  at the age of twenty !!

He was educated for first twelve years at home by his mother, Adélaïde-Marie, who was very well versed in Latin and classical literature. His passion for mathematics surfaced at the age of fourteen.

Whatever he created in mathematics happened between the age of fourteen and twenty, time period most humans spend figuring out what to do in life ! But for a rather young man with no formal degree in mathematics, these six years were enough to lay the foundation of two big branches of abstract algebra,  Galois theory and group theory !
Some concepts named after Galois are

He died of a gun shot in a duel at the age of twenty. His last words to his brother, Alfred were

Ne pleure pas, Alfred ! J'ai besoin de tout mon courage pour mourir à vingt ans !”
(Don't cry, Alfred! I need all my courage to die at twenty.)

Another genius who hardly got recognized for the degree of talent he had during his rather short life time ! For sure, that much life time was enough to leave a lasting impact on the mathematical world !

Niels Henrik Abel - A Mathematician !

Born on August 5, 1802 in Findoe, Norway.

Started school at the age of 13.

Father passed away when he was 18.

Died on April 6, 1829 in Froland, Norway at the age of 26 years , 8 months !!!.

What he achieved in such a short span of life dominated by poverty is shockingly amazing !!
For mathematical details you can see the links below and the links there. Even if you are not able to appreciate/understand the quantum of his mathematical work, you can not escape the awe you feel for him when you read about his life !! In spite of a poverty stricken (especially after the death of his father)
short life, he managed to do enough to leave a few things for us !!!

In 2002, Niels Henrik Abel Memorial Fund was created to award Abel prize to outstanding mathematicians every year. First award was given in 2003 and the prize amount is 6 million NOK(about 750,000 Euro) !!

For me the story of Abel is a very humbling and inspiring at the same time.

The people I admire !

The writings in this blog will be about the about people whose existence till now, for me, was as names in the equations, awards, authors or some stories. To say the least I must say, not only life seems to be far less complicated but also I learn to appreciate very small and simple facts in science and in life, after reading about their life and work. Shall soon return with my first such post on one of the greatest mathematician.
